The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2011 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
John Larroquette
Nominated for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
“I’m overwhelmed, and I don’t get overwhelmed easily. I was having breakfast with my wife this morning after learning about this incredible honor and was thinking about how most of my career has been sort of like a pinball: I go on my instincts more than my intellect, and then use my intellect to rationalize some stupid decisions I’ve made with my instincts! To be accepted by the theater community at this point in my career is quite humbling, and I feel a lot of gratitude. There won’t be a celebration. It’s just the little smile—a little more today, probably. I’m going to get a haircut and I’m going to do my show tonight, and that’s what I have to concentrate on. I’ve been nominated six times for Emmys and I’ve won five, so I know what it’s like to say ‘the honor is just being nominated.’ But in this case, for this award, for this city and for this play, it truly is. I came from Los Angeles as a 60-year-old Broadway virgin. Whether or not the trophy goes home with me really is irrelevant, because I’m enjoying being part of this world, and hope that I can contribute more to the theater community as time goes on.”
